I am a Japanese-American director with a passion for daring theatre that engages audiences with under-told stories in a visual, visceral way. I’ve had the honour of developing and premiering new work with incredible playwrights including April De Angelis, Dipika Guha, Eve Leigh, Julia Pascal, Guleraana Mir, and many others. I am the Artistic Director of New Earth Theatre. Formerly, I was founding artistic director of Theatre Témoin, through which I developed work with several organisations including The Lowry, Ovalhouse, Roundhouse, and Without Walls (GDIF/SIRF). Through Témoin I have also produced work in Rwanda, Israel, Kashmir, Lebanon, France, and the USA. I’ve worked freelance for The RSC, The Royal Court, The Bush Theatre, New Earth, Theatre503, Kansas City Rep (USA), and Ayyam Al-Masrah (Gaza). I’ve worked extensively with vulnerable adults and young people in contexts of conflict, hold a PhD in Trauma and Theatre at East 15 (University of Essex), and am a twice-recipient of the Wellcome Trust People Award for projects exploring trauma, addiction, and mental health. I care deeply about working for greater equality and representation in our industry, and am a board member of Stage Directors UK and Projekt Europa.
