I am a Japanese-American director with a passion for daring theatre that engages audiences with under-told stories in a visual, visceral way. I’ve had the honour of developing and premiering new work with incredible playwrights including April De Angelis, Dipika Guha, Eve Leigh, Julia Pascal, Guleraana Mir, and many others. I am the incoming artistic director of New Earth Theatre. Formerly, I was founding artistic director of Theatre Témoin, through which I developed work in collaboration with several festivals and venues including Without Walls, The Salisbury Playhouse, Ovalhouse, Roundhouse, GDIF, SIRF, The Mercury, and Everyman Cheltenham. Through Témoin I have also produced work in Rwanda, Israel, Kashmir, Lebanon, France, and the USA. I have worked freelance for various companies including The RSC, The Royal Court, The Bush Theatre, New Earth, Theatre503, Kansas City Rep (USA), and Ayyam Al-Masrah (Gaza). I’ve worked extensively with vulnerable adults and young people in contexts of conflict, am completing a PhD in Trauma and Theatre at East 15 (University of Essex), and am a twice-recipient of the Wellcome Trust People Award for projects exploring trauma, addiction, and mental health. I care deeply about working for greater equality and representation in our industry, and am a board member of Stage Directors UK and Projekt Europa, and and a core member of Migrants in Theatre.
